Virgil vs. J.R.R. Tolkien

Virgil:
Aeneas
Virgil was an ancient Roman poet who wrote during the Augustan period. He wrote poems such as the Eclogues, the Georgics, and his famous epic poem the Aeneid. The Aeneid is seen as a national epic of ancient Roman times to modern day. The Aeneid is about Aeneas, who is a Trojan refugee destined to complete his mission to reach the shores of Italy. Aeneas has to leave his home and family behind in order to build a city there. More information about the Aeneid can be found here.

Virgil was a huge influence on many Western literature and most notably, Dante's Divine Comedy, were Virgil was Dante's guild through purgatory and hell. Virgil was considered the Roman national poet and the ultimate form of perfection in his art. He influenced writings like Edmund Spenser's The Faeric Queene and John Milton's Paradise Lost. He also influence John Dryden, Matthew Arnold and Alfred, and Lord Tennyson. There are also many similarities with Virgil's the Aeneid and J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Virgil

J.R.R. Tolkien:
Tolkien was a poet, philosopher, and university professor who is best know for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote during the modern era, but took influence from earlier poetry, languages, and  mythology. Modernism was a time when traditions, prior to WWII, were rejected and people wanted a new way of doing things. For writer this meant creating stories that were know and had never been told before. Tolkien did this by creating a fantasy land. He went in great detail in order to invite and allow his readers to visualize his words. Tolkien refrained from using words that were common among fantasy works, so that  the readers were truly experiencing something new and unlike anything they read before.

J.R.R Tolkien

My product is a comparison of Virgil's Aeneid and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings writing.

  1. I think it is "Virgil was Dante's guide" not guild. Also I clicked on "comparison" and it denied my access. Maybe you should change the permission on the page to public. When you compare Virgil and Tolkien you should give more specifics.

  2. What is similar between Virgil's writings and Tolkien's books? Your product probably goes into a lot more detail about this, but could you give a brief summary? (also you need to make your product public so others can view it)

  3. You have some great information about the Aeneid and J.R.R. Tolkien's books, but I would compare and contrast the specific similarities of both books. Also, I could not access your product.

  4. Nice descriptions, though I can't get into your product. I like the mention of Dante's Comedy, and the direct references to Tolkein's writings. Very nice post!

  5. Interesting and unique comparison to look at. When we study the "classics," they seem like one in a million works that can never be matched. However, it is interesting to see how you place Tolkien on the same level as Virgil. You have to wonder if in 200 years, Tolkien's works will be held at the same standard as Virgil's works. If you think about it, the Star Wars franchise really revolutionized the scifi era. Maybe students of the future will get to analyze Star Wars and Harry Potter instead of Shakespeare and Wordsworth.

  6. I really like this concept--> Tolkien definitely relied on similar themes: Thorin and the dwarves in The Hobbit being uprooted from their homes and forced to wander in search of a new one, as well as Aragorn has some great parallels to the sort of demi-god Aeneas, as they are both rightful kings by birth. This was a really interesting post.
